The Northern America film market continued to be on fire last weekend, with the big picture about 30 percent higher than ‘Men in Black International’ for the same period in 2019. ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ reigned supreme with $58.6 million, down 60 percent from the ring.
Pixar Animation’s ‘Lightyear’ ranked second with $51 million, Tom Cruise’s ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ ranked third with $44 million, and Northern America’s cumulative box office of $460 million topped the annual crown.
‘Lightyear’ is the first Pixar Animation movie to be released in theaters after ‘Onward’ in 2020, and the previous ‘Soul’, ‘Luca’ and ‘Turning Red’ were all straight up streaming.
As ‘Toy Story’ spin-off ‘Lightyear’, the opening box office of $51 million is lower than the industry’s expectations of $70-80 million, compared to the 2019 ‘Toy Story 4’ opening of $120 million, the gap can be quite large.
In the entire “toy” series, ‘Lightyear’ only performed higher than the $29.14 million of ‘Toy Story’ (1995) when CG animation was first developed.
Excluding ‘Toy Story 2’ and ‘A Bug’s Life,’ which did not open to a large extent, the film opened just above ‘Toy Story’ in 1995 ($29.14 million), ‘Onward’ at the beginning of the epidemic in 2020 ( 39.11 million U.S. dollars), 2015’s ‘The Good Dinosaur’ (39.15 million U.S. dollars), the fourth worst opening in Pixar history.
The key problem is that ‘Lightyear’ reputation in Pixar’s work is also considered poor, its CinemaScore rating A- and ‘Cars 2’ ‘Onward’ tied for the bottom. The film’s Rotten Tomatoes index is 77%, IMDb rating of only 5.3.
The film was “banned” in markets such as the Middle East and Malaysia because of its homosexuality, and its global opening weekend grossed only $85.6 million, which was also below expectations.
Previously, Pixar’s internal employees were quite unhappy with the arrangement at Disney headquarters due to three consecutive productions going straight to streaming media.
Now $ 200 million investment in the work of the opening failure, coupled with poor word-of-mouth is also estimated that the future still can not affect Disney’s plans.
‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ did reign at the top, but the 60% drop was higher than the previous two films.
The film has now accumulated $249 million in Northern America and $622 million worldwide.
Northern America’s most stunning summer performance so far is still ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, which still managed to get $44 million in its fourth week of release, down only 15% from the previous year.
Its Northern America cumulative box office of $460 million is not only the year’s top grosser, but also the second highest grossing film in Paramount Northern America’s history, behind only ‘Titanic’.
Top Gun: Maverick’ global box office in the absence of Russia and mainland China market, cut $885 million, more than ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ $791 million, to become the world’s top-grossing Tom Cruise works.
Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ got $4.2 million at the box office in its seventh week of release, Northern America $405 million per episode and a cumulative global total of $942 million, temporarily ranking as the global annual crown.
‘Bob’s Burgers: The Movie’ ranked fifth with $1.1 million in its fourth week of release and accumulated $29.76 million in Northern America and $31.83 million worldwide.
