Twenty-six years have passed since the release of Toy Story. This 1995 movie is not only a childhood memory for most people, but also the starting point of Pixar Animation Studios.
As Pixar’s first animated feature film, ‘Toy Story’ was widely acclaimed, not only was it nominated for three Oscars, including Best Score, Original Screenplay and Original Song, and because it was the first feature-length animation ever completed using a computer, it was awarded a special achievement award, which can be said to be the best example of the peak of debut.
Of course, the reason why ‘Toy Story’ has won great recognition is not only because of the technical innovation, but also because of the profound content of the elegant and popular.
Overall, the movie is not only imaginative, but also educational, with the relationship between the toys, deftly talking about the dark side of human emotions, such as jealousy, sibling rivalry, confusion of identity.
Who would have thought that a story about toys could be engraved with such delicate textures and even set off a wave of tremendous achievements in both the artistic and commercial fields, and be regarded by all as an aesthetic classic that spans generations.
Interestingly, the role of Lightyear, also because with the pioneering spirit, further become the iconic character of Pixar.
Whenever an employee completes ten years of employment, he or she will receive a Lightyear bronze statue as a token of appreciation for his or her dedication along the way.
As mentioned before, ‘Toy Story’ is of great significance to Pixar, and it is only right that there should be a gaiden work, like Lightyear’s personal story, especially in today’s world where the epidemic is prevalent and we desperately need an intergalactic animated movie describing the hero’s origin.
‘Lightyear’ plot monotonous into the lack of physical time too long
Unfortunately, the film’s plot is very monotonous, the pattern is too small, but also did not properly use the interstellar background, originally thought to be an epic adventure across planets, but in fact only a short mission.
Not to say it’s an origin story, but more like a toy commercial that was accidentally shot too redundantly.
Therefore, the fatal flaw of the film, that is, the physical sense of time is too long, full-fledged full sprint, but when the story began to step, gradually showing fatigue.
Then, one after another, the supporting characters, in addition to the robot cat Sox, and a serious lack of charm.
The supporting characters are naturally distinctive, but annoyingly bizarre, and lacking a relevant emotional thread, so that the audience can not appreciate the persistence, fear, crime and admiration of the supporting characters, where it comes from.
In the end, many of the actions are not only abrupt, but also do not contribute to the establishment of the thickness of the character, and can not be quiet to follow them on the journey together.
For this reason, even if we provide more antecedents and consequences to explain the impact of the character’s behavior and personality, it still feels like filling time – the logic makes sense, but the emotional aspect is not impressed.
Back to the protagonist Buzz Lightyear, more unfortunately, even though the character is distinct, but there are contradictions, such as a sense of justice, but a sense of responsibility to go missing.
Buzz Lightyear as an elite unit – a member of the Space Cavalry, haphazard brain rush, and no sense of team, rather than a maverick, dedication to self, rather than arrogant and condescending, fear of failure.
Even, even the villain Zurg’s motivation is incomparably pale, like a child sulking at not being able to beg for candy, and thus decides to destroy the world that causes suffering.
Ultimately, the film seems to pay tribute to many predecessors, compared to the ‘Interstellar’ time dilation, or the most difficult enemy is always the inner demons of the transformation, but also the shadow of the ‘Star Wars’ series.
It is a pity that the tribute not only does not add up, but also makes fans more aware of the gap between this work and other classics.
In short, ‘Lightyear’ is a work with clear advantages and disadvantages, with a crispy crust but a boring filling.
If you’re still interested, we recommend going straight to the IMAX version, but if you’re still on the fence, wait for it to go live on streaming, then lower your expectations and watch it as a special, it’s still a good deal.
However, if you expect ‘Lightyear’ to bring the same touch as ‘Coco’ and ‘Soul’, you are likely to be disappointed.
