Recently several media revealed that Warner Bros. Discovery decided to “cut” the ‘Batgirl’ film project as to why Warner did so, the official did not give a response.
Steven, editor-in-chief of Collider, said, “I talked to people who saw ‘Batgirl’ and they were very disappointed. The costumes look cheap, especially Michael Keaton’s Batman costume.”
Batgirl’ is directed by ‘Bad Boys for Life’ Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, with a script by ‘Bumblebee’ writer Christina Hodson.
Leslie Grace played the female lead Barbara Gordon, Michael Keaton, Brendan Fraser, J.K. Simmons and others also joined the film.
The film was originally scheduled for release in 2023 due to the epidemic blockade reasons and multiple make-up shots, making the investment up to $90 million.
Warner executives decided that the film would neither be released in theaters nor go straight to HBO Max, even though post was almost done.
According to media reports, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO earlier hope that DC can make a more influential film, apparently ‘Batgirl’ the effect of the finished film does not meet this requirement.
Media ‘Variety’ said that the ‘Batgirl’ project was decided when Jason Keira and Ann Sarnoff were at the helm of Warner, when Warner was trying to increase HBO Max subscribers for a simultaneous streaming, theatrical release of Warner films in 2021.
Although Warner made the decision to give some of the directors and actors compensation, but also hurt their relationship with the filmmakers, such as collaborators for many years Nolan ran to Universal with the new film.
When Warner and Discovery merged to form Warner Bros. Discovery in April this year, a new CEO, David Zaslav, came in and made changes to the company’s overall operational strategy.
Batgirl’ is awkward: if the film is to be released in theaters also need to spend 30-50 million U.S. dollars in distribution costs, Warner saw the film felt sure that it could not recover the cost.
What if we let ‘Batgirl’ go straight to HBO Max? Today’s HBO Max operation strategy has changed again, so the film has a kind of high but not low meaning.
Warner is reportedly holding an earnings call later this week and may make strategic changes to HBO Max, at which time it will make an official response to the axing of ‘Batgirl’.
In response to Warner’s decision, Deadline reporter Justin Kroll said on social media, “A minute after this article was posted, I got a call from a rival studio executive who had been fired. He said ‘I’ve been in Hollywood for 30 years and this is the first time this has happened to me.'”
