“22 Bullets” Review: What kind of surprises can Jean Reno bring to us in a weird gangster movie?

“22 Bullets” is a 2010 French film directed by Richard Berry and starring Jean Reno.

“22 Bullets” is based on a real event that happened in Jacquesbet in the late 1970s in France, and offers another way to look at gangster films.

The prototype of the story, Jacques Embel, was the last godfather of the Marseille gang of gangsters in the last century. He survived 22 rounds of bullets in a murder, and then carried out many retaliations that the police could not verify.

The film is adapted from his legendary experience, but the story and connotation of the film are sublimated, allowing people to see an unexpected gang boss in the film.

Plot Summary:

Charly Matte (Jean Reno) was a godfather of the Marseille gang.

As he grew older, he gradually washed away and moved towards the right way, and he had a wife and children.

However, a sudden attack left him with 22 bullets. Although he was rescued, his right hand had been disabled, and the attackers hit his bottom line again and again.

In order to retaliate, he had to change many of his habits and become cruel.

Highlights Appreciation:

Although the main story of the film is revenge, the fire fighting scene in the film is not good, which is why the film has been criticized. Many people do not appreciate the content shown in this film.

In fact, “22 Bullets” is a relatively deep film, the plot is interspersed with the unique way of life of many gang bosses, which makes people see the reason for his success from the side.

The two most important points are trustworthiness and not killing unarmed people. This is why even opponents dare to confess everything to him with confidence.

In addition, family is another highlight of the film.

While Charly Matte took revenge on her enemies, she didn’t take the initiative to harm their family.

He even hesitated every time someone begged for mercy on the grounds of his family. This is his biggest weakness but it is also human nature.

His opponent has no principles, and even wants to kill his child in order to deal with him.

For the child, he crossed the barbed wire and sneaked into the enemy’s nest. The scene where he saved the child and the scene where a gang member released the child against the water made people see that the gangster also had persistence in their hearts.

These pictures show the tenderness of a tough guy rarely seen in gangster films.

The details presented in “22 Bullets” are not the plot most viewers of this type of movie like.

Viewers watching gangster films like to watch intense firefights, while “22 Bullets” focuses on showing the unique French “Marseille gangster” culture.

“22 Bullets” is more like a group movie than a conventional movie, showing the various social influences and ways of doing things of the French gang through the interaction of the characters in the film.

It is for this reason that “22 Bullets” is not as popular as other gangster films, but is rarely known after it was released for so long.

The protagonist Jean Reno has appeared in many movies that the audience likes, such as “Leon” and “Mission Impossible”, “The Expendables” and other works.

However, this kind of profound film type is still difficult to be recognized by the general audience.
