I found another French niche movie “My Afternoons with Margueritte”, which is really happy!
In 82 minutes, “My Afternoons with Margueritte” gave me a “good afternoon time” worthy of constant recollection.
This is a warm film about family, friendship, and love.
Like many movies, “My Afternoons with Margueritte” has almost no climax.
But “My Afternoons with Margueritte” can tell the story to your heart.
Even, “My Afternoons with Margueritte” is called by many people as “the most healing movie ever seen in my life!”
The protagonist Germain of “My Afternoons with Margueritte” is a fat and vulgar man in his 50s.
Germain had no father and lacked maternal love since he was a child. He was often ridiculed by his teachers and classmates.
When he grew up, Germain was uneducated and not good at expressing.
Germain’s favorite thing every day is to mess with friends in the bar and talk to each other.
Even if Germain reaches middle age, he still feels lost in life and refuses to accept himself.
Until one day in the afternoon, Germain met the elderly but knowledgeable Margueritte in the square.
He began to usher in a life change.
Margueritte always likes to read in the afternoon square, Germain likes to listen.
She read him “La Peste” by Albert Camus and “Promise at dawn” by Romain Gary’s autobiography.
Margueritte even gave Germain a dictionary.
With the help of Margueritte, Germain also began to slowly learn to read and read.
He began to learn to think about the problems he hadn’t thought about before, and to make progress towards a better self.
But later I discovered that the encounter between the two turned out to be two-way redemption.
Because Margueritte was too old to suffer from eye disease, her nephew had no money to pay to the current nursing home.
Margueritte had to move to a nursing home with poor conditions.
After Germain learned of all this, he personally built a pair of crutches for Margueritte and learned to read to her.
Then Germain set off to Belgium, hundreds of kilometers away, to take Margueritte back to him for support.
On the way back, 95-year-old Margueritte, happily like a child.
As said at the end of the film: This is an ordinary encounter. Apart from love and warmth, there are no other adjectives…
Love is not the only story in love.
Sometimes, there is not even a sentence “I love you”, but we still love each other.
In addition to the friendship between the two, there are too many moving details in the film.
For example, Germain always thought that his mother didn’t care about him, but he didn’t expect that after his mother died, he secretly saved himself a real estate and gave him the umbilical cord when he was born.
And the moment when he learned that his girlfriend was pregnant.
It is worth mentioning that the only three background music in the film are also “witnesses” of family, love, and friendship.
It can be seen that the director’s mind is also quite small and delicate.
