Last October, film “Rust” star Alec Baldwin opened fire while filming an audition, killing cameraman Halyna Hutchins and seriously injuring director/writer Joel Souza.
Recently, Alec Baldwin released a lawyer’s statement, revealing that he was found not guilty.
The New Mexico Bureau of Occupational Health and Safety Investigations investigated the “manslaughter” on the set of “Rust” and determined that Alec did believe the gun was loaded with fake bullets, the statement said.
As a producer, he only has the right to change the script and casting, but not the management of other matters, and it is determined that Alec is not responsible for the accident.
In December last year, Baldwin was interviewed by the TV media after the incident. He said that he did not pull the trigger and did not know why the prop gun “fired”.
“Someone put real bullets in the cylinder, and there shouldn’t be real bullets in the cylinder. Someone is responsible for this, I can’t say who it is, but it’s definitely not me!”
“I was turning the revolver and releasing the hammer when the gun went off (he didn’t pull the trigger),” Baldwin emphasized.
It is worth mentioning that the revolver in the movie “Rust” adopts an external hammer design, which has many disadvantages compared to the modern internal hammer design.
Especially for single-action revolvers, there is no blocking mechanism between the hammer and the firing pin. If the hammer is knocked, it will cause accidental fire.
Today’s pistols basically have a built-in safety mechanism that prevents the hammer from touching the firing pin if the trigger is not pulled.
Even so, many users of single-action revolvers wear the gun with the empty chamber in the cylinder at the side of the hammer to avoid misfire.
So why did Baldwin point the revolver at the photographer? Baldwin explained that photographer Halyna Hutchins was adjusting the angle of the lens when he pointed the gun at her at the photographer’s request.
“She asked me to point the gun in a certain direction, and I did, just right under her armpit.”
