Veteran superhero movie director Joe Russo (“Captain America 2/3”, “The Avengers 3/4”) said in an interview with Variety that the cancellation of the ‘Batgirl’ movie was a “murder”.
“It’s hard for me to imagine that something so stark, so expensive, is being murdered in this way. It’s sad, but we’re in a time where corporate sociopathic tendencies are rising out of people’s fears.”
Russo blasted Warner Bros. directly, accusing it of a lack of confidence that led to the cancellation of the $90 million film.
It is more financially advantageous for the company to take a tax write-off on the film than to release it. A previous industry analysis showed that cancelling the release would at most cut another $15-20 million in losses for Warner.
It was previously rumored that ‘Batgirl’ would hit streaming platforms later this year, and Russo had the same negative view on the matter.
