Chris Pratt says his voice in “Super Mario Bros.: The Movie” will be unique

Perhaps many fans are still hung up on the news that Chris Pratt will be voicing Mario in the upcoming ‘Super Mario Bros.: The Movie’. But at least, Chris Pratt himself seems to think it will be something special.

I worked closely with the directors and tried a few things, plus found something I’m really proud of and can’t wait for people to see and hear,” he said in an interview with Variety. It’s an animated voiceover narrative. It’s not a live-action movie. I’m not going to be running around in a plumber’s outfit. I’m providing a voice for an animated character, and it’s up-to-date and unlike anything you’ve heard before in Mario’s world.” That last sentence seems to imply that Pratt will not be imitating Charles Martinet’s iconic take on Nintendo’s famous plumber.

Additionally, Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri recently said in a statement, “Criticism dissipates when people hear Chris Pratt’s performance, and maybe not entirely – people like to voice their opinions, as they should. Whenever we finally hear Pratt’s interpretation of Mario, I, and I assume all other Twitter users, will almost certainly comment.”

‘Super Mario Bros.: The Movie’ was originally scheduled for release in December, but was recently delayed. It will now premiere in Northern America on April 7 and in Japan on April 28.

The film’s cast also includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi and Jack Black as Bowser, and although Martinet is not cast as Mario, he will appear in a surprise cameo.
