Cillian Murphy, “The Guardian” photo. The final season of “Peaky Blinders” is about to begin, and so is “Oppenheimer.”
In the interview, Cillian Murphy revealed that preparation for Nolan’s new film “Oppenheimer” (he starred in the American “father of the atomic bomb” J. Robert Oppenheimer) was “a lot of reading”, but did not include learning the science of building the atomic bomb.
“I’m interested in the man himself and the personal effects [of making the atomic bomb]. As for the mechanics of the atomic bomb, that doesn’t suit me, I don’t have the intellectual talent needed to understand them, but characters with contradictory qualities are very Attractive.”
Cillian Murphy said that his “Peaky Blinders” male lead Tommy Shelby is also a character with conflicting thoughts in his mind, and many viewers do as well, so they will resonate with them.
“Oppenheimer” is Nolan’s old partner Cillian Murphy’s first leading role in a Nolan movie, but he says the role doesn’t matter.
“I’ll always be there for Chris, no matter how many roles, Chris calls me and I’m here. In the studio system, there are still filmmakers making challenging, demanding films, using Film instead of IMAX (the ‘not IMAX’ feels like a typo here? Nolan is an IMAX maniac after all), wouldn’t that be great? I think he’s the poster boy for this – he, Paul Thomas Anderson, Quentin Tarantino, some great filmmakers doing interesting, large-scale productions.”
