Since its premiere in November last year, Marvel’s “Eternals” has been controversial. After its launch, word of mouth and ratings fell below the pass line, and some plots in the film also attracted controversy.
Therefore, many fans and audiences blamed the film’s bad looks, but everyone was actually a bit biased.
Why do you think “Eternals” is ugly?
This is by no means because of a certain plot or character, but the whole film has problems, and the so-called controversial picture is just the tip of the iceberg.

The villain of “Eternals”
First of all, the most obvious problem with “Eternals” is the failed shaping of the villain.
Like the dark elves of “Thor 2”, Deviants, as the biggest villain of “Eternals”, lack the logic of action and lines to deepen the core of the character.
The result is to give them a pack of power-absorbing beasts.
The real reason they exist in the film may be just a tool to advance the plot, that’s all.
Kro, the leader of Deviants, can see the director trying to make him have a story, but the film is too awkward.
Just when you thought he would do something, he suddenly left the field hastily. The previous foreshadowing was wasted.

Mediocre action scene
Aside from the special effects, the action scene in “Eternals” is an absolute disaster.
The most obvious performance is in the scene where Gilgamesh guards the gates of Babylon.
One of the strongest Eternals in the canon, fighting the Deviants turned out to be just a punch or a slap in the face.
Even Dark Souls, known for its clumsy action, has far better action shots.
And there are two reasons for this mediocre performance.
First, the action choreography is tedious, and the visuals are equally bland.
And since it’s an action scene, there really isn’t any special effects to add. At most, it’s just adding a halo to Gilgamesh’s gloves, giving him the feeling of superpower beating the villain, that’s all.
Ikaris and Sersi are missing sparks
The film portrays Ikaris and Sersi as lovers who have been in love for thousands of years.
But the film does not show their love that transcends the century. They have no obvious sparks, and some only have family or compatriots.
On the contrary, Druig and Makkari’s flirtation is more like lovers.
“Eternals” has too many characters
There are too many characters in the film that are most complained about.
“Eternals” has a total of 10 Eternals external villains and Black Knigh, so there are too many characters to tell.
The end result is that the film is constantly forced or the plot needs to reduce the number of people.
First Ajak is killed, then Gilgamesh is sacrificed, then Kingo quits, then another Deviants plot kill.
In the end, Sprite and Ikaris also voluntarily withdrew from the Eternals stage.
Seriously, if you cut the Eternals down to 5 or 6 bits from the beginning, and then go a little deeper into the portrayal of each character, wouldn’t it be better than making a movie and letting the characters leave the scene without thinking?
Kingo’s admiration for his companions, Sprite’s self-loathing, Phastos’ disappointment in human beings, etc., these characters can all play well by themselves.
But in the end, the result is that each character seems to have a little impression, but not strong, Makkari and Black Knigh have become tools and burden-shaking characters.
“Eternals” is too slow
“Eternals” is more like a road movie in a way. The members are constantly changing scenes, and many stories will gradually unfold.
But the bad news is that the unfolding process was so slow that “Eternals” was stretched to two and a half hours, which led many critics to think the film was too bloated.
While the film introduces many new worldviews, such as grand concepts such as the legacy of the Tenjin group, the Eternals and the Deviants’ feud, it doesn’t handle it well.
Look at the predecessor “Guardians of the Galaxy”, as Marvel’s first cosmic series, all its backgrounds are directly explained in the dialogue of the characters.
With the natural direction of the story, the audience will naturally be brought into this vast universe.
Like “Eternals”, every concept is like a noun, and too many will make people feel boring.
“Eternals” is too disjointed
When you look at the above three problems together, you will find that the biggest problem with “Eternals” is the sense of fragmentation of the plot.
Because the triple relationship of characters, plot, and rhythm is not well connected, when you watch the whole movie, there will be a sense of inconsistency.
It feels okay to just watch a certain scene, but the whole is always out of place, or there is an obvious sense of splicing.
“Eternals” is like a big trailer
Do you know what kind of movies are the most embarrassing?
That is, after watching the whole movie, you think the trailer egg at the end is more exciting than the main movie.
It’s a pity that “Eternals” is one of them. After watching the feature film, it feels like that.
The celestial at the end, the appearance of Thanos’ brothers, and the stinger of Black Knigh and Blade directly make the audience look forward to the future of Marvel.
But we need to be clear about what the audience expects?
Is the Eternals back again?
of course not! It’s how the new characters like Celestial, Blade, Black Knigh, and Eternals will behave when they meet the old guys like Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and the Hulk.
See it? That’s the strength of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
When a new series comes out, even if the series is mediocre, there are always seniors who can lead it on the right track.
If I had to say that the Eternals setting was interesting, the director was also a real failure.
Although “Eternals”‘s literary drama is good, I don’t think it’s done well in terms of emotion, scene distribution, and plot connection.
Fortunately, the film’s bad won’t be the end of the series, and as long as the remaining characters can be integrated into the MCU, the Eternals are still hot rookies.
Let’s look forward to how Marvel fills the hole.
