Paleontologists have recently discovered a new giant predatory carnivorous dinosaur with tiny forearms that look like Tyrannosaurus, but are anything but. And in naming it, scientists have taken full advantage of their sense of humor.
Meraxes Gigas, a new dinosaur found in northern Patagonia, Argentina, is a carnivore that roamed the Earth millions of years before Tyrannosaurus.
Juan Canal, project leader of the Ernesto Bachmann Museum of Paleontology in Neuquén, Argentina, told CNN that “Meraxes” is not directly related to Tyrannosaurus.
After recovering the nearly complete forelimbs, paleontologists determined that Meraxes’ forearms were much smaller in proportion to the rest of its body. Very similar to the kind of predatory dinosaur we all know and love that is so famous in the movies.
Despite the discovery of many fossils, scientists have been trying to recover details about the anatomy of Meraxes for nearly 30 years.
Researchers have revealed more about the carnivore from recently unearthed fossils: 36 feet long (about 10.9 meters) and weighing more than 4 tons.
Meraxes belong to the family Carnotauridae, a group of dinosaurs that inhabited most continents during the early Cretaceous.
While paleontologists continue to study the newly discovered fossilized bones to learn more about the dinosaur, it has now been given a proper name.
According to the scientific magazine ‘Current Biology’, “Meraxes” is named after Rhaenys in the ‘House of the Dragon’, a spin-off of ‘Game of Thrones’. Meraxes” is named after the dragon ridden by Queen Targaryen in ‘House of the Dragon’, a spin-off of ‘Game of Thrones’. The fantasy masterpiece will be launched in August.
