Oscar-winning director and Cannes Palme d’Or Steven Soderbergh complained in a recent interview with the media that popular superhero movies lack sex scenes.
He made the remarks while promoting his new film “KIMI,” which will be released on HBO Max on February 10.
Steven Soderbergh told The Daily Beast that it’s almost impossible for him to direct a superhero movie where the characters are almost asexual.
“I’m not a snob, and I don’t think superhero movies are low-level. I’m probably too down-to-earth, I can’t make a film in a world where Newtonian physics doesn’t exist. It’s probably unimaginative, so the only thing I make is Science fiction takes place in a spaceship.”
“[In superhero movies] warping time, overcoming gravity, light beams from my fingers are all things that I can bear, and what I can’t bear in this type of movie is that the people in the movie have no sex life. As far as I know, Not only is there no sex in this fantasy world, but you can’t figure out who pays these heroes? Who do they work for? How is the job done?”
Maybe Steven Soderbergh hasn’t seen “Eternals”, which is the only MCU movie with a sex scene.
Because there are very few sex scenes in the MCU and DCEU works, on the one hand, it is because most of these films are rated PG-13 (the R-rated “Deadpool” and “Watchmen” have sex scenes.
But the rating isn’t the only reason. Titanic, also rated PG-13, has sex scenes.
It can only be said that the love scene between adults is not the focus of these superhero movies, and even if there is, it is limited to hugging and kissing.
The scene in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is close to a sex scene.
