‘Stranger Things’ Will Byers’ actor Noah Schnapp talks to ‘Variety’ about Will’s sexuality, saying, “It’s 100% clear now: he’s gay, and he does love Mike.

“Claiming that the matter has been hinted at since Season 1, but not named, is a slowly developing character arc that also corresponds to Will’s growing up, not taking the easy way out: suddenly saying a character is gay.

Schnapp reveals that he gets a lot of people coming up to him saying they relate to Will: “I was in Paris not long ago and I had a man in his 40s say to me, ‘Wow, this character Will makes me feel great and identifies with me, that’s exactly what he was like when I was a kid.’ It made me very happy that they were writing about the real experiences, the real struggles of a real character.”

Schnapp also talked about the scene where Will was crying in the car, saying, “Everything in that scene was intentional, like I had my hand over my mouth – he was hiding it, he didn’t want Mike to hear it.”

This segment is now an emoticon, and he says he’s happy to get people to like it.

After that, Will and his brother Jonathan’s conversation, originally not written in the script, is shot after his scene in the car, the crew saw his crying scene and Jonathan’s eyes protective, think “this must have a scene”, so while shooting while writing, added this paragraph.

“Gotta let people know Will is not alone, because we always see him struggling, feeling overwhelmed, unable to be himself.Jonathan is speaking in code, telling people like Will in the most perfect way: I care about you, and I accept you no matter what.”
