The past and present of “Searchlight Pictures” screen logo

The “Searchlight Pictures” logo has completely removed the word “Fox”, leaving only the classic spotlights and boulders.

In the past 30 years, the original “Fox Searchlight Pictures” logo was the beginning of many well-received movies, including “Birdman”, “Jojo Rabbit” and “Napoleon Dynamite”.

“The French Dispatch” is one of the company’s films showing the new logo, marking its break with the original logo.

Founded in 1994, Fox Searchlight Pictures is an American independent film production and distribution company.

Most of its films have a budget of less than US$20 million.

These low-cost films are not unpopular, they prove that independent films can win over 100 million U.S. dollars in the North American market while chasing the Oscar for Best Picture Award.

Such as “Black Swan”, “Juno” and “Slumdog Millionaire”.

“Juno” is also the highest grossing film among Fox Searchlight Pictures films, at $143 million.

Other representative works of the company include “Little Miss Sunshine”, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing” and so on.

In 2019, Disney completed the acquisition of 21st Century Fox and acquired entertainment assets including 20th Century Fox and Fox Searchlight Pictures.

In January 2020, Fox Searchlight Pictures was renamed Searchlight Pictures.

The company’s logo changes accordingly.

The following is a historical review of the silver screen logo of “Searchlight Pictures”

“Fox Searchlight Pictures” period

1995-1996

Fox Searchlight Pictures was founded in 1994, and it didn’t start using the logo until 1995.

During this time, the company did not have an opening animation, but used a static image as a closing sign at the end of the film.

1996-2020

1996-2011

In 1996, the company began to use the opening animation. This logo first appeared in “Blood and Wine” and finally in “Cedar Rapids”.

2011-2013

In 2011, the logo was updated and made its debut in “Win Win”. It last appeared in “The Way, Way Back” released in July 2013.

2013-2020

In 2013, the original U.S. News Corporation was split into 21st Century Fox and News Corp.

The signature of “A News Corporation Company” was removed, which was the last logo of the company to use the name “Fox”.

In 2020, the company changed its name to “Searchlight Pictures”.

The logo first appeared in the movie “Enough Said” released in September 2013, and for the last time in the movie “A Hidden Life” released in December 2019.

“Searchlight Pictures” period

2020-now

On January 17, 2020, Fox Searchlight Pictures announced that it was renamed “Searchlight Pictures”.

The most significant change in the new logo is the removal of the word “Fox”.

The city landscape of Los Angeles in the logo is more realistic, and the mountains in the background are more layered.

The new logo was officially unveiled in the movie “Downhill” on February 14, 2020.
