In the “Thor: Ragnarok” cut, there is a scene where Odin died in an alley in New York City.
At that time, Loki sent Odin to a nursing home in New York.
But Odin quickly left and became a tramp, eventually dying in the alley.
But in “Thor: Ragnarok” in theaters, Odin’s death happened somewhere in Norway.
Before he died, Odin had a heart-to-heart talk with his two sons.
In “The Story of Marvel Studios”, director Taika Waititi revealed their reasons for modifying this segment.
“But Anthony Hopkins has his own thoughts about the ‘sentimentality’ of Hollywood and Hollywood movies, and that’s right.”
“And my reaction was, ‘Yes, Anthony, I don’t like these things, so let’s change the subject. How do we subvert this and make it a more interesting death scene?’”
Taika Waititi’s answer is simple: give fans a scene they have always wanted.
“I have to remind myself that we must give the audience something they want. They actually have an understandable desire to add some emotional elements to these films.”
“So I realized, ‘we absolutely should give them that version of Odin’s death, that’s what they deserve, they’ve been waiting for a long time.’”
