U.S. Quidditch officially renamed “U.S. Quadball”: to distance itself from J. K. Rowling

Recently, the original name of “U.S. Quidditch” has been officially changed to “U.S. Quadball”. The League had previously stated that it was changing its name to distance itself from ‘Harry Potter’ author J.K. Rowling and to reduce the negative impact of trademark issues.

This real-life ‘Quidditch’ sport, in which participants clip brooms, combines rugby, basketball and dodgeball and is based on the Quidditch competition created by J. K. Rowling in the ‘Harry Potter’ series.

According to a statement from the coalition’s founder, the new name was chosen by thousands of stakeholders surveyed along with the movement’s national governing body.

The intention to change the name was first announced in December 2021, following intense controversy surrounding J. K. Rowling’s comments on trans women and their place in the feminist movement, with many fans considering her ‘Transphobia’.

The ‘Quidditch’ organization says the sport is “one of the most progressive sports in the world in terms of gender equality and inclusion,” in part because the sport follows the “gender maximum” rule, where they give any player on the field the They give any player on the field the same gender, and no more than four total players can be on the field per team.

The organization added, “Quadball is more than just a new name; it is a symbol of the sport’s limitless future.” “With it, we hope to turn the sport into what it aspires to be: something for everyone.”
