David Hollander, the producer, director, executive producer and developer of “American Gigolo”, has been fired from the Showtime network.
Showtime and Paramount have issued a joint statement confirming the incident, purportedly following an investigation into allegations of inappropriate behavior.
Hollander, the creator of “Ray Donovan,” considered one of Showtime’s most successful showrunners, has been fired from the show and Paramount has terminated his production contract.
“American Gigolo” is a remake of the 1980 film of the same name, starring “The Punisher” Jon Bernthal and Gretchen Mol (“Boardwalk Empire”).
Production is said to be continuing today, with a fellow Hollander taking over as executive, likely David Bar Katz, one of the show’s executive producers.
Bernthal stars as 2020’s contemporary version of “American Gigolo” – down-and-out California sex worker Julian Kaye, who was convicted of murder 18 years ago.
Now, he wants to find out who framed him and get back his old love, Michelle (Mol).
The show promises to be “as explosive as you’d expect, while digging deep into the emotional and sexual complexity of today.”
