Director James Cameron told GQ magazine about the difficulties of creating an Avatar sequel, saying that ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ had been in the works since 2013 and had not been finally produced by this year, September 2022.
And the film is very expensive, exactly how expensive?
“Especially expensive,” he told the studio’s 20th Century Pictures executives: “Avatar: The Way of Water is the worst business case in the history of cinema.” He also revealed that the film would have to reach the third or fourth place in the box office list (Northern America box office of $800 million, global box office of about $ 2 billion) just to make back the money, and this is just the break-even point, just the beginning of profit.
