‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ ranks second in the year with 434 million global openings, and Northern America’s openings are lower than expected

After 13 years, the sequel to the global box office juggernaut  ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ (short for ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’) came to Northern America with an opening of $134 million, below industry expectations of $175 million. This is the sixth highest December opening in the Northern America market, on par with the $134 million performance of ‘The Batman’.

The film opened at the global box office at around $434.5 million, the second highest opening of the year behind ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ at $449 million.

The film’s global box office opening heavy IMAX on $48.8 million, becoming the second highest opening in IMAX global film history, but also the highest December global box office opening in IMAX history.

Earlier, director James Cameron had stressed that the key to judging whether the film would be profitable would be the performance of the third week. His work has always been to go long, 13 years ‘Avatar’ Northern America opened only $ 77 million.

The film also performed below expectations outside of Northern America, with a $434 million global opening at the box office, ranking second in mainland China affected by the epidemic, getting only $57.1 million (398 million yuan), far below expectations.

However, IMAX in mainland China reaped 110 million RMB, accounting for only 1% of the screen count contributing up to 27% of the box office, marking the highest opening market share in IMAX’s history in the Chinese market. Eighteen of the top 20 box office cinemas in mainland China were IMAX theaters.

The Korean market performed well ranked second only to Northern America and China, while the UK performed poorly and India ranked sixth to make a splash.

Avatar: The Way of Water’ grossed 66% of its global opening weekend from 3D screens, with the Chinese market accounting for nearly 100% of 3D screens and the Northern America market accounting for 58% of 3D ticket sales.

‘Strange World’ ranked fourth with $2.2 million in its fourth week of release, Northern America accumulated $33.77 million and $56.99 million worldwide.

‘The Menu’ ranked fifth with $1.7 million in its fifth week of release, Northern America accumulated $32.12 million and $61.29 million worldwide.
