After 13 years, the sequel to the global box office juggernaut ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ (short for ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’) came to Northern America with an opening of $134 million, below industry expectations of $175 million. This is the sixth highest December opening in the Northern America market, on par with the $134 million performance of ‘The Batman’.
The film opened at the global box office at around $434.5 million, the second highest opening of the year behind ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ at $449 million.
The film’s global box office opening heavy IMAX on $48.8 million, becoming the second highest opening in IMAX global film history, but also the highest December global box office opening in IMAX history.

The Korean market performed well ranked second only to Northern America and China, while the UK performed poorly and India ranked sixth to make a splash.
Avatar: The Way of Water’ grossed 66% of its global opening weekend from 3D screens, with the Chinese market accounting for nearly 100% of 3D screens and the Northern America market accounting for 58% of 3D ticket sales.
