‘Black Adam’ Northern America opens with $67 million, a record for a film starring Dwayne Johnson

The new DC film ‘Black Adam’ starring Dwayne Johnson won $67 million in the Northern America market last weekend, also bringing the weekend total to $113 million, ending a nearly three-month slump.

‘Black Adam’ with $67 million set the record for the highest opening for a Johnson starring film in Northern America, ‘Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw’ with $60 million, ‘Rampage ‘ $35.7 million, ‘Skyscraper’ for $24.9 million. Among DCEU titles, ‘Black Adam’ Northern America opened with a comparable performance to ‘Aquaman’ at $67.9 million, up from $53.5 million for ‘Shazam! .

Black Adam’ opened last week in 76 overseas markets simultaneously, collecting $142 million in its first week at the global box office.

Black Adam’ is the last theatrical film to be released by Warner this year. Due to the huge financial pressure on parent company Warner, Warner’s marketing and distribution budget since September has only been enough to allow ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ and ‘Black Adam’ to open in theaters during the year.

The next big production from this blockbuster studio is ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’, which opens next March.

In terms of word of mouth, the freshness of ‘Black Adam’ dropped to 41% on Rotten Tomatoes, but the popcorn index was as high as 90%, and the MTC comprehensive rating was 41/100. Over 49,000 reviews on IMDb gave ‘Black Adam’ a 7.1/10 and a CinemaScore of B+.

In overseas markets, the U.K. market got $6.1 million ranked first, Mexico $5.3 million ranked second, Brazil $4.9 million ranked third, and South Korea $3.1 million ranked eighth.

‘Black Adam’ is the ninth Hollywood film to break $100 million in global openings in 2022, up from last year’s $131 million opening for Marvel’s ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ neither of which was released in mainland China.

Black Adam’ reportedly cost nearly $200 million to make, comparable to ‘Suicide Squad’ at $185 million and ‘The Batman’ at $185 million, and higher than ‘Aquaman’ at $160 million and ‘Shazam!

Northern America came in second last week with George Clooney and Julia Roberts’ ‘Ticket To Paradise‎’, which opened at $16.5 million. The film is mainly aimed at middle-aged audiences, with 64% of ticket buyers over the age of 35.

The film investment of $60 million, the film was released in overseas markets at the end of September has accumulated $80.59 million, allowing the film to reach $97.1 million at the global box office.

The film has a freshness rating of 55% on Rotten Tomatoes, but the CinemaScore score is A-, and the audience’s reputation is not bad.

In third place was the horror film ‘Smile’, which took in $8.47 million in its fourth week, with Northern America accumulating $84.43 million and $167 million worldwide.

‘Halloween Ends’ earned just $8 million in its second week, placing it fourth. The film fell by as much as 80% in the second week, almost the worst decline in history. The film Northern America grossed $54.17 million, with a worldwide gross of $82 million。

In fifth place was the musical comedy ‘Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile’, which took in $4.25 million in its third week of release and accumulated $28.76 million in Northern America and $37.16 million worldwide.
