A few years ago, it was almost a pipe dream for a Japanese animated movie to open in Northern America with 2,367 theaters (including IMAX) and get around $10 million, but now it’s an everyday occurrence.

Before 2021, only two Japanese animated films had gotten an opening of $10 million or more, the Pokémon animated films released by Warner in 1999 and 2000, respectively.
