David O. Russell’s (‘The Fighter”’Silver Linings Playbook”’American Hustle’) splendid new film ‘Amsterdam’ opened in Northern America last Friday to a dismal box office performance. ‘Amsterdam’ grossed just $6.5 million for three days in its first week of release and cost a whopping $80 million.
‘Amsterdam’ also has a poor reputation for the film, with a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 34%, an MTC score of 47, and a CinemaScore of B.
Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington play three friends who work together to solve “one of the most amazing secret conspiracies in American history”, Rami Malek, Zoe Saldana, Robert De Niro, Anya Taylor-Joy, Michael Shannon, Chris Rock, Timothy Olyphant, Mike Myers, Andrea Riseborough, Matthias Schoenaerts, Alessandro Nivola, Taylor Swift and more also star.
This is Russell’s first feature film since 2015’s ‘Joy’, also written by him, shot by Emmanuel Lubezki(‘Gravity”Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)’), Hildur Guðnadóttir(‘Joker”Chernobyl’ ) soundtrack.
