“Halloween Ends” Northern America opening box office wins but hits series low

As we enter the third week of October, the Northern America movie market is slowly recovering. The horror film ‘Halloween Ends’ opened to $41.2 million to win, and the weekend total was up 31% from last week, the best in the last 12 weeks.

Another horror film ‘Smile’ came in second with $12.4 million, accumulating over $70 million at the box office. This weekend’s DC ‘Black Adam’ opening is expected to bring the weekend total back to the billion dollar level.

‘Halloween Ends’ is following Jordan Peele director s ‘Nope’, Northern America weekend box office opening the highest new film, but also the second highest opening horror film this year.

But the film was the worst performer in the trilogy of ‘Halloween’ reboot series, with the first two films opening at $76 million and $49 million respectively.

This performance is due to ‘Halloween Ends’ poor word of mouth, Rotten Tomatoes 41% fresh, and the popcorn index is only 57%. cinemaScore rating C+, not as good as the last episode of B-. Together with the film’s simultaneous online streaming, the cumulative box office will not be too high.

But Universal only spent about $30 million to shoot the third episode, the film’s global opening weekend of $58 million, it is not difficult to recover the cost.

Paramount’s small-budget horror release ‘Smile’ took in $12.4 million in its third week, with Northern America accumulating $71.16 million for a worldwide total of $137 million. It needs about two more weeks to surpass ‘Scream 5’ with $81 million and ‘The Black Phone’ with $89.9 million to become the second best performing horror film of the year, but it will be hard to surpass ‘Nope’ with $123 million.

In third place last weekend was ‘Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile,’ a musical comedy that took in $7.4 million in its second week of release, down 35 percent from the previous week. The film Northern America accumulated $22.8 million, and only $26.65 million worldwide. Not good news for a $50 million family film.

The fourth place in the chart is ‘The Woman King’, which got $3.7 million in its fifth week of release, $59.7 million in Northern America and $76.54 million worldwide.

David O. Russell’s new all-star film ‘Amsterdam’ continues to struggle, ranking fifth with only $2.9 million in its second week of release. With $80 million invested in the film, Northern America has accumulated $12 million and $18.5 million worldwide, making it the year’s biggest loser.

In terms of awards season films, Park Chan-wook’s ‘Decision To Leave’ opened in Northern America and did well with $90,700 in three theaters and $30,000 in a single theater. The film will expand to 38 theaters this weekend.
