Canadian actor Ryan Grantham, 24 (‘Riverdale,’ ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid,’ ‘Supernatural,’ ‘iZombie’) was recently sentenced in British Columbia’s Supreme Court to life in prison, 14 years without parole, for second-degree murder for killing his mother in 2020. He was sentenced to 14 years without parole and a lifetime ban on gun ownership.
Grantham admitted in court that on the night of March 31, 2020, he shot his mother, Barbara Waite, in her home in Squamish Township, B.C., while she was playing the piano, striking her in the back of the head, and filmed the scene with a Go-Pro.
In the hours that followed, he drank beer and smoked marijuana, then drove away from the house with three guns, some ammunition and homemade napalm.
Grantham also said that after leaving home, he initially planned to murder Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
On the way, he again considered a mass shooting at the Lions Gate Bridge or at Simon Fraser University.
Eventually, on April 1, after driving about 200 kilometers east from his home, Grantham turned around and drove to the Vancouver Police Department, telling police, “I killed my mom.”
In the two and a half years since then to the present day, Grantham has been in police custody and police have revealed that he has received psychiatric treatment.
In court, Grantham’s attorney said he suffered from anxiety, depression and had expressed intent to commit suicide and harm others before killing his mother.
Grantham also explained to his lawyer that he killed his mother so that she would not have to face the consequences of the crimes he might commit.
Grantham started acting when he was less than 10 years old and has appeared in more than 30 films and TV shows.
