‘Decision To Leave’ will represent South Korea in competition for ‘Best International Picture’ at new Oscars

The Korean Film Promotion Committee announced that ‘Decision To Leave’, directed by Park Chan-wook and starring Wei Tang and Hae-il Park, will represent Korea in the competition for the Best International Film Award at the 95th Academy Awards next year.

The film was released in Korea on June 29, went on VOD service on August 9, and will be released in Northern America and UK on October 14.

Park Chan-wook won Best Director in the main competition at the 75th Cannes Film Festival for this film.

Other films in the competition include ‘Broker’ directed by Hirokazu Koreeda, ‘Emergency Declaration’ directed by Jae-rim Han, ‘Hansan’ directed by Han-min Kim, ‘Hommage’ directed by Su-won Shin, and ‘The Contagion’ directed by Kang Dong- hun. The Contorted House’ directed by Kang Dong- hun, etc. Finally, ‘Decision To Leave’ was selected as the representative of Korean films.

The Film Promotion Committee said that the works that participated in the competition were selected with good reasons, especially in terms of artistry.

However, considering the nature of the Academy Awards, in addition to pure artistry, the director’s popularity, directing ability, the possibility of the film selling well in the Northern America market, and the ability to promote overseas distribution were also taken into consideration.

The final decision was that ‘Decision To Leave’ was the most appropriate.
