“Dune”: Chinese audience boycotts the 3D IMAX version, they want to watch the 2D version

The initial release plan of “Dune” in China did not include the 2D version, and the pre-sale of the film only had a 3D layout.

This caused great dissatisfaction among Chinese movie fans, and was even nicknamed “China Special 3D”.

“Variety” magazine gave an in-depth report on the phenomenon of Chinese audiences resisting 3D.

“Variety” confirmed that “Dune”‘s producer and Chinese distributor Legendary Pictures did not initially submit an IMAX 2D version.

A person familiar with the matter said that China Film Group Corporation contacted Legendary Pictures to provide an opportunity to speed up the introduction of the “Dune” IMAX 2D version, and said that this was “uncommon”.

There are rumors on the Internet that the IMAX 2D version of “Dune” was obtained by the domestic fan group directly applying to the official.

“We have only had 3D for so many years. It’s really enough. We want to watch the IMAX2D version of “Dune”!” wrote a widely circulated Weibo article.

At the same time, stubborn fans spread a large number of posters and animations supporting “Dune” 2D last week to welcome the arrival of the film.

“Variety” stated that China is the world’s largest 3D movie market and the only market that can only release IMAX 3D without providing IMAX 2D.

But audiences have been very annoyed by this technology in the past ten years, and complaints about 3D movies have focused on “dizziness”, “3D glasses darken the picture”, “3D special effects are distracting and unnecessary”, and “tickets”. Too expensive” and other aspects.

“Dune” was shot in IMAX 2D mode throughout the entire process, and was later converted to a 3D version.

2D is 4K film source, 3D is 2K film source, so the best viewing mode of “Dune” is of course IMAX 2D.

However, if there is no IMAX2D, it is only a 3D option, and the box office of a movie can rise by 20~30%.

And at the beginning of the development of 3D movies, the Chinese authorities have implemented new policies to encourage local movies to produce more 3D and giant screen versions, and reward movies that reach a certain box office.

Director Denis Villeneuve said in an interview with “Harper’s BAZAAR” last month that he hopes “Dune” can be presented to everyone in Imax 2D, calling 3D “a gadget”.
