According to foreign media reports, the sequel to the Japanese fantasy action film “Untitled 47 Ronin Sequel” starring Keanu Reeves has begun shooting in Budapest.
“Untitled 47 Ronin Sequel” is directed by Ron Yuan (“Mulan”), starring “Ant-Man” and “Legend of Jupiter” actress Anna Akana, and “John Wick 3” actor Mark Dacascos.
“47 Ronin”, released in 2013, tells the story of a group of samurai avenging their dead owners.
“Untitled 47 Ronin Sequel” takes place more than 300 years after the first episode. It is described as a “mixed genre, including martial arts, action, horror and cyberpunk movies”.
The film is produced by Universal 1440 Entertainment, a subsidiary of Universal Pictures’ Home Entertainment Division, and will be streamed directly after it is produced (it was previously said that it is Netflix).
The word-of-mouth and box office of “47 Ronin”, which was released in 2013, was not considered a success.
“47 Ronin” spent 175 million US dollars in investment but its global box office was only 151 million US dollars.
Counting the costs of the announcement of “47 Ronin”, it is estimated that it has caused a huge loss of nearly 200 million U.S. dollars to the world.
The film’s Rotten Tomatoes has a freshness of 16%, with an IMDb score of 6.3 and a Mtime.com score of 6.4.
This movie also put Keanu Reeves into a career trough.
After “47 Ronin” was released, the six major Hollywood studios basically stopped looking for him as the male number one.
It wasn’t until the “John Wick” series made him become popular again that there were follow-ups such as the movie “The Matrix 4”.
Taking into account the difference between the operational logic of streaming media and the distribution of traditional cinema chains, perhaps such a mixed fantasy type of East and West can become popular in streaming media.
