Gemma Chan will star in a biopic focusing on Anna May Wong, the first Chinese-American Hollywood star, and is executive producer on the project with Nina Yang Bongiovi (“Passing” “Fruitvale Station”), working with Working Titles Films.
The first Asian-American playwright to win a Tony Award (“M. Butterfly”) wrote the screenplay based on the biographical book “Anna May Wong: From Laundryman’s Daughter to Hollywood Legend” by Hodges, Anna May Wong’s niece Anna Wong serves as a consultant.
Anna May Wong was born in Los Angeles in 1905 and starred in 60 films between 1919 and 1960.
She started her career in the silent era with films such as “The Toll of the Sea” “The Thief of Bagdad” “Piccadilly” “Shanghai Express” “Hollywood Party”.
Anna May Wong starred in the series “The Gallery of Madame Liu-Tsong” under her real name, and collaborated with famous movie stars such as Douglas Fairbanks, Marlene Dietrich, Clark Gable.
In 1960, Anna May Wong starred in Walk Of Fame as the first Chinese star.
