The Korean drama “Squid Game” has become an annual phenomenon. Not only has it become Netflix’s highest-rated original series in history, it has also been recognized and made history during the awards season in the United States.
I wonder if “Squid Game” can replicate the miracle of the awards season of “Gisaengchung” in 2019.
On November 29, at the 31st Gotham Independent Film Awards, “Squid Game” defeated popular British and American dramas such as “Small Axe” and “The Underground Railroad” and won the “Best Feature Breakthrough Drama Award”.
“Squid Game” became the first Korean drama to win this honor.
Among the TV nominations for the Golden Globe Awards announced on December 13, “Squid Game” won three nominations for the best drama series, actor, and supporting actor in the drama category. It is also the first Korean drama to be recognized by the Golden Globe Award.

This is the first time in the awards season for many years that a non-English drama series has received so much recognition.
Media analysis believes that although “Squid Game” is pronounced in Korean, because the “distributor” Netflix is an American company, it is eligible to participate in these awards.
