Last year, director Christopher Nolan’s new film “Oppenheimer” chose to join Universal Pictures, ending a nearly 20-year partnership with Warner Bros.
In a recent exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, M. Night Shyamalan, who will serve as the chairman of the jury at the 2022 Berlin Film Festival, revealed that he had suggested to Nolan to join Universal, and said that the creators enjoy the current creative atmosphere at Universal.
The box office of “Oppenheimer,” due in 2023, will determine how long the Nolan-Universal relationship can last.
Universal has established long-term partnerships with directors such as Jordan Peele (“Get Out”) and M. Night Shyamalan (“Split”, “Old”).
It was after Shyamalan settled in Universal that he recovered his strength with films such as “Split” and “Glass”.
“Everyone absolutely absolutely enjoys it here,” Shyamalan told the media. “I said (to Nolan) that Universal respects original stories and insists on theatrical releases. At a time when everyone is worried about the death of original movies and movie theaters, I don’t believe that at all. I don’t believe a word of it. Universal has been making big bets on this — keep investing — that’s where they are. I hope Jordan, Nolan, myself, and anyone who wants to come here or at other studios People, let’s prove together that audiences want to see fresh, original ideas in theaters.”
“Oppenheimer” is scheduled to be released in North America on July 21, 2023, with a production budget of $100 million, and it will maintain a 100-day theatrical window.
