Amy Winehouse’s new biopic ‘Back to Black’ has landed the lead role of Marisa Abela (‘Industry’), who is in early talks to play Winehouse.
She is currently the frontrunner, though not yet fully locked into the role, there are other actors in the running, and the producers have reportedly always planned to be casting newcomers.
The film was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (‘Fifty Shades Darker’), written by Matt Greenhalgh (‘Queer as Folk’) and produced by Studiocanal.
‘Back to Black’ will focus on the music and life of Winehouse, who went from a budding North London jazz singer to a Grammy-winning music superstar with such hit albums as ‘Frank’ ‘Back to Black’ ‘Lioness: Hidden Treasures’ and other hit albums, but her long struggle with alcohol and drug addiction led to her death in 2011 at the age of 27.
Hollywood has been developing a biopic of Winehouse for years, and a Lotus Entertainment production that was set to star Noomi Rapace ultimately failed to do so.
While no feature film focusing on Winehouse has yet been released, the 2015 A24-produced documentary ‘Amy’ was a huge success, winning the Academy Award for Best Documentary.
