The new version of the long-running ‘Red Sonja’ movie is on track, with Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz (‘Revenge’ ‘Zone 414’), Wallis Day (‘Batwoman’) and Robert Sheehan (‘The Umbrella Academy’ ‘Mortal Engines’) in the lead roles. The film has already started shooting in Bulgaria, the original female lead Hannah John-Kamen (‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ ‘Ready Player One’) withdrew due to scheduling conflicts.
Michael J. Bassett (‘The Terminal List’ ‘Reacher’) directed, Joey Soloway (‘Transparent’ ‘Six Feet Under’) and Tasha Huo (‘Tomb Raider’) wrote the script.
The ‘Red Sonja’ comic was created by Roy Thomas (writing) and Barry Windsor-Smith (illustrating) for Marvel Comics in 1973, based in part on the female assassin “Red Sonya of Rogatino” from the 1934 short story “The Shadow of the Vulture” by Robert E. Howard. Assassin “Red Sonya of Rogatino” image, but also references the role of “Dark Agnes de Chastillon”.
It is about the heroine Red Sonja who lives with her family in a humble house in the meadow. At the age of 17, a group of mercenaries kill her family and burn down the house. She tries to fight back, but cannot hold her brother’s sword and is brutally raped by the mercenary leader.
Amidst her cries of vengeance, Scáthach, the legendary warrior woman of Ulster epic & Irish mythology, appears, granting her amazing fighting skills, provided she cannot have sex with a man unless he can defeat her in a fair fight.
The story was first adapted into a movie in 1985, starring Brigitte Nielsen and Schwarzenegger, and this one will have a different story idea and characters, and is planned to be a brand new series.
