In the 1972 presidential election, in order to obtain intelligence on the Democratic Party’s internal campaign strategy, on June 17, five people, led by James W. McCord, Jr., the chief security adviser to the Republican Nixon campaign team, infiltrated the Watergate Building in Washington. The Democratic National Committee’s office was arrested on the spot when they installed bugs and secretly filmed relevant documents.
As a result of this, Nixon announced on August 8, 1974 that he would resign the next day, thus becoming the first president in American history to resign because of a scandal.
