‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ press reviews have been officially unblocked today, and IGN has given the film a 7 out of 10 rating: the MCU’s first romantic comedy.
Rating: 7 out of 10 Good
‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ is weighed down by an incoherent plot and problematic treatment of its characters, but thanks to the excellent chemistry between Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, the film is quite successful as the MCU’s first romantic comedy.
Overall Comments.
‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ is largely successful in honoring Thor’s long journey toward self-actualization, and rarely falters from the crackling chemistry between leads Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Tessa Thompson.
The film counts as the MCU’s first romantic comedy and plays with these clichés in a delightful way.
But while Thor and Jane’s relationship is well handled, ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ is less flattering – and much safer – than you might expect in terms of driving a larger MCU story.
As the film progresses, Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher feels underutilized and Tessa Thompson’s King Valkyrie is frustrating.
Taika Waititi’s trademark humor and visual style carried over from ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, which was crucial in powering the film through its uncomplicated plot.
As Hemsworth is as passionate as ever about the Asgard people, the future is bright for the love and the thunder that belongs to Thor.
