Industrial Light & Magic, one of the world’s leading visual effects companies, which has worked on Star Wars, Marvel Super Heroes, DC Super Heroes, Harry Potter, Transformers, Avatar, and many more. Industrial Light & Magic will air a documentary on the legendary company on parent company Disney’s Disney Plus channel on July 27.
Industrial Light & Magic was founded in May 1975 by the director George Lucas. It started as a special effects division of Lucasfilm, the film production company that Lucas founded when he started working on his first film, Star Wars. It has since grown into the top special effects company in the history of world cinema.
The company has won numerous awards, including an historic 15 Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects as of February 2015, 28 Academy Awards for Scientific and Technical Achievement, and countless other awards, and is the only special effects company to have won the National Medal of Science.
In 2012, The Walt Disney Company acquired Industrial Light& Magic as part of its acquisition of Lucasfilm.
