Universal Pictures announced that its worldwide box office revenues have reached $3 billion this year, saying it is the first studio to gross more than $3 billion worldwide in a year since the outbreak of the new crown. This is due in large part to its production of ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ and ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’.
Universal Pictures has released 11 films this year, and ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ and ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ alone have grossed $1.76 billion, accounting for more than half of the studio’s worldwide box office total.
Among them, ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ grossed $976 million and ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ contributed $790 million.
In fact back in 2019, $3 billion at the global box office was not an insurmountable threshold, with Warner Bros., Universal Pictures and Sony Pictures all having topped the list.
Disney earned a record $11.1 billion that year with hits such as ‘Avengers: Endgame’, ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Frozen II’.
This does not include the $2 billion box office of the then-acquired 20th Century Fox.
