Warner Bros. announces that the next movie in the MonsterVerse, Godzilla vs. Kong, has begun production, and releases a new official plot synopsis.
A new synopsis for Godzilla vs. Kong has been released now that the film has started production. Godzilla first appeared in the Japanese film Gojira in 1954. The character has since starred in multiple follow-ups, but most recently appeared stateside in the 2014 film Godzilla, directed by Gareth Edwards. King Kong made his cinematic debut even earlier, in 1933. The giant gorilla has made several appearances in films since then, including Peter Jackson’s award-winning King Kong in 2005, and the Oscar-nominated Kong: Skull Island in 2017.
In 2015, Warner Bros. announced that King Kong and Godzilla would be battling against each other in their very own movie. Longtime fans of the characters will remember that the giant monsters squared off once before in King Kong vs. Godzilla in 1962, with Kong being crowned the definitive winner. Much like the 1962 film, Godzilla vs. Kong is said to have a clear winner, as well as director Adam Wingard promising that the film will be a “massive monster brawl movie“. While it’s been known for quite some time that the monsters will battle on screen, fans now have access to an official plot synopsis.

Now that Godzilla vs. Kong has entered production, Warner Bros. has released an official plot synopsis for the film. Godzilla vs. Kong will be the next movie in the MonsterVerse, following Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and will see humanity caught in the middle of a battle between the two giant creatures. The official plot synopsis is below.
In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will see the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans’ origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever.
With the film obviously showing the human effects of the battle, Godzilla vs. Kong has started to fill out its cast in recent months. Alexander Skarsgård has been cast in the film, alongside actresses Eiza González and Rebecca Hall. Deadpool 2‘s Julian Dennison will also appear in the film, along with Brian Tyree Henry, Shun Oguri, Jessica Henwick, Kyle Chandler, and Demián Bichir. Millie Bobby Brown will also be reprising her Godzilla: King of the Monsters role. The official press release seems to suggest that The Walking Dead‘s Danai Gurira will not be included in the cast, like previously rumored, given that her name was not included anywhere in the information Warner Bros. provided to media outlets.
Given that Godzilla and King Kong are two of the biggest movie icons in history, Godzilla vs. Kong seems like the next logical step for the universe Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment have set up. Bringing these two giant monsters together is enough of a reason to fill seats in theaters, but the incredible casting decisions should also help the film achieve box office success. Now that fans have a clearer understanding of what will happen when King Kong and Godzilla go head to head, it will likely build anticipation for both Godzilla vs. Kong and the upcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
